Sydney Central Business District

Sydney
Sydney Central Business District featuring a city and heritage architecture
Forming the heart of Australia’s most buzzing city, this harbor-side neighborhood has many of Sydney’s star attractions.

The Sydney Central Business District, or Sydney CBD in short, is known for its sparkle, be it from the glistening harbor, its shiny skyscrapers or its glitzy restaurants and shops. This is by far the best place to base yourself if you have the chance to come to Australia’s premier city but have limited time.

This bay of Port Jackson was first settled by Europeans as a penal colony. When Australia’s capital and parliament were moved to Canberra in the late 1920s, Sydney remained the first port of call for most first-time visitors to Australia. This highly cultural city with its glorious bays and beaches is busier than ever before, but has never lost its appeal.

Enjoy the views of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge on Millers Point and Sydney Opera House on Bennelong Point. Enjoy a night out in the historic hotels and pubs of The Rocks or come back during the day to visit the sandstone Garrison Church, the row of heritage-listed terraces at Argyle Place and the Sydney Observatory.

Gaze up at the CBD’s shiny skyscrapers from the bustling George Street Boulevard or Pitt Street Mall. Gaze down on the action from Sydney Tower.

For some more retail therapy, venture inside the colossal Queen Victoria Building (QVB) on George Street. Have a picnic in nearby Hyde Park and admire its art decoANZAC Memorial and St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Slow your pace and visit the Royal Botanic Garden and hop over to Darling Harbour where the Australian National Maritime Museum awaits. Visit the nearby Sea Life Sydney Aquarium or the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in the former Maritime Services Board building.

For more cultural delights, visit the Art Gallery of NSW and get tickets for a sparkling show at the futuristic-looking Sydney Opera House or historic Capitol Theatre.

To see more of the harbor, take the ferry to Manly Beach, Mosman or the Taronga Zoo from the main ferry terminal of Circular Quay at the foot of the CBD.

Bring your sunnies and let the always sparkling Sydney CBD brighten up your holiday. There are new surprises around every corner and the foreshore alone is good for days (and nights!) of entertainment.
