Discover a wonderful blend of architectural grandeur and artistic prowess while visiting Saint Mary's Basilica (officially the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary). Attend a community mass service and enjoy the spiritual ambiance from the tranquility of the church plaza.
Saint Mary’s Basilica stands on the site of a late-19th century adobe church and took on its present-day appearance in 1914. For over a century it has been one of the most important places of worship for the Diocese of Phoenix.
The creamy-hued facade displays elements of the Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival architectural styles. Symmetrical staircases lead up from either side to arched doorways, the center of which is crowned by a coat of arms. Look up at the two identical bell towers, both topped with onion-shaped domes and crosses.
A collection of stained-glass windows, which are among the largest in Phoenix, are highlights of the Romanesque-style interior. Peruse the windows to see portrayals of the lives of the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph and friars of the Franciscan order. Representations of the Last Supper and Crucifixion adorn the altar. Similarly striking is the high relief artwork of the Stations of the Cross.
Daily mass services welcome both locals and visitors to the city to join for peaceful religious devotion. A serene atmosphere also awaits at the adjoining Virginia Piper Plaza, where pathways wrap around tree-lined lawns. Study the Circle of Peace, a bronze sculpture that portrays children holding hands and playing happily. A gap invites visitors to complete the circle by holding the hands of two of the children.
Located in Downtown Phoenix, Saint Mary’s Basilica is a short walk from major city attractions such as the Arizona Center shopping mall and Heritage Square. Metered parking is possible on surrounding streets.
The basilica is open daily and admission is free. A self-guided tour pamphlet is available for a fee at the gift shop.
