Travel Guide
Lake Clark National Park and Preserve showing forests and a lake or waterhole
On the edge of a stunning blue-green lake with views over rolling forested mountain ranges, this town offers a beautiful vacation location.

Walk from Port Alsworth through a labyrinth of dense woodland and rocky peaks. Fish in the clear water right outside your accommodations or enjoy a relaxing boat trip across Lake Clark.

Set near the wilderness of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, this small town is an ideal place to escape the strains and stresses of modern life. A short stroll through the surrounding woodland will give you a sense of the area’s natural tranquility. If you feel like taking a slightly longer walk, make your way along the 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) trail that runs south of town to Tanalian Falls. This majestic waterfall cascades down a rocky ledge, providing a dramatic change from vivid green scenery all around.

For somewhat less exertion, grab a rod and enjoy fishing in the sheltered bay tucked into the sprawling eastern shore of Lake Clark. Stock up on equipment and supplies from the fishing center nearby or book a spot on one of the boat trips departing from the port. These trips usually take the form of day-long expeditions which combine fishing with seeing the sights of the 42-mile-long (67.5-kilometer) lake.

To see more of the park, head to the ranger station, which is a 2-minute drive west from town. Here, learn valuable information about this wild environment and pick up maps and guidebooks.

The remote town of Port Alsworth is in southern Alaska and can only be reached by plane. Regular flights depart from Anchorage and take approximately 1 hour. Reserve a place to stay in one of the several lodges in the town. Dine at one of the small cafés and restaurants.

Port Alsworth provides a great gateway to one of the country’s most isolated and exceptional national parks.
