A picturesque gathering place in the center of Downtown Los Angeles provides a great spot to rest and play as you explore the city’s attractions.

It’s easy to visit Pershing Square while you’re exploring the heart of Downtown LA, as it’s surrounded by hotels and restaurants with many popular attractions nearby. Join the locals wandering around the grounds or take a seat on one of the benches to watch the world pass by.

If you’re traveling with children, relax as they enjoy the playgrounds and grassy areas. They’ll find plenty to look at, including picturesque fountains and statues. Have a game in the chess area or catch an event or concert throughout the year. Enjoy an outdoor ice-skating rink in winter and fill your bags with fresh produce from a weekly farmers market.

Pershing Square became a public park in 1866 under the name of La Plaza Abaja. It was renamed in 1918 in honor of General John Pershing. The park joins a variety of historic sites to discover nearby. Visit the Bradbury Building, a national historic landmark and the oldest commercial building downtown. It was built in 1893 and is often used as a backdrop for movies.

Get your camera ready for photos with the Spanish-inspired exterior of the narrow Hilton Checkers Los Angeles. See one of the world’s shortest railways, Angels Flight Railway, a funicular built on a steep hill in 1900.

Make sure you’re hungry when you visit Grand Central Market, across the street from Angels Flight Railway. The gourmet food market, originally opened in 1917, is filled with artisanal food treats. Admire about 2,000 pieces of postwar and contemporary art at The Broad museum. Explore further afield in the Arts District see the ever-changing exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Shoppers love the Arts District Co-Op for handmade jewelry and vintage clothes.
