See the dams sometimes referred to as the eighth wonder of the world, learn about the 1953 flood and get close to the North Sea’s marine life.

The Delta Works is one of the Netherlands’ most important attractions. Without it, all the flower fields and museums in Zeeland would be under threat from flood. Learn about the Delta dams’ function, discover the technical knowledge behind them and encounter the wonderful wildlife of the North Sea at the Deltapark Neeltje Jans.

Learn about the 1953 flooding disaster that was the catalyst for the Delta Works. Much of the land surrounding the Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt rivers was below sea level and existing dikes did not provide adequate protection. During a storm surge, the rising waters of the North Sea flooded Zeeland, killing over 1,800 people and decimating farmland.

Holland’s history of reclaiming and keeping land from water is a fascinating one which shaped the emergence of Dutch democracy and continues to influence the country’s political system today. Discover plenty of fascinating stories at the Delta Expo at Deltapark Neeltje Jans. Watch a video introduction to the exhibits before delving into the details of history and technological progress that have made the Delta Works possible.

The spot is not all engineering and technical feats, however. Deltapark also features seals and sea lions. These species were once populous in the area. Now that the works are complete their numbers are steadily increasing again. Take a boat ride from the park for a chance to spot some of the creatures in the wild. For a guaranteed close-up sighting it’s best to go to one of the seal shows that run several times daily.

Learn about the sharks and other marine creatures endemic to the area at the Aquarium. Thrill seekers can even go swimming with the sharks. Measure yourself next to a whale’s baleen to get a sense of the scale of the gentle giants of the North Sea.

If you’re visiting the Delta Works area in the summer with children, stop in for some play time at the waterpark, complete with slides and water playground.
